THE SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION (SRI): an efficient, economical and ecologically-friendly way to increase productivity
About 150 million hectares (9%) of the world’s cultivated area are devoted to the production of rice (Oryza sativa L.), the staple food of over half of the world’s population. The total annual rice production of about 620 million tons supplies about 20% of the population’s caloric needs. Still, despite production increases during the Green Revolution, there are more than 400 million people enduring chronic hunger in rice-producing areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
