Festivals, Films and Farmers Mark CORA Indonesia 2011!!

From February 26 to March 1, 2011, the People's Coalition for Food Sovereignty (KRKP), IPPHTI, Farmers Forum and Farmers Consortium in collaboration with Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP) organized a series of discussions with 8 farmer groups at Karwang District, Indonesia, for CORA (Collective Rice Action) ASIA 2011. This activity was attended by 50 farmer families.

CORA (Collective Rice Action) ASIA 2011 was launched on 1 January 2011 with the theme "Safe Rice for Life and Livelihood!" in 15 countries across the region. In China, CORA started with activities on March 10, 2011. 100 questionnaires were distributed to the public to learn more about their knowledge on traditional rice varieties and hybrid rice, habits when purchasing rice and awareness about pesticide residues. The results revealed that consumers generally had some knowledge about pesticides and were concerned about the safety of the food consumed in their daily life.

Living Farms, one of the anchor organizations for CORA (Collective Rice Action) India 2011, met with four MPs of the ruling party in Orissa as part of CORA Asia 2011, to discuss about the dangers of hybrid rice and the increasing control of corporations over rice farming.

From February 25 to March 15, 10 community-level workshops were organized in Mayurbhanj, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada and Ganjam districts.

On World Consumer Rights Day, March 15, 2011, Lok Sanjh organized "Organic Farmers and Consumers Interface: Seminar on organic rice as safe food" at District Sheikhupura, the home of basmati. The activity was organized in conjunction with Collective Rice Action (CORA) 2011 being celebrated in fifteen Asian countries with support from Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP). The purpose of the activity was to promote organic produce as safe food, assert the rights of the consumers to safe food, and to foster close interaction between consumers and organic farmers.

CEDAC Celebrates CORA!

From March 8 to 9, 2011, an exhibition on local rice seeds and a rice festival was organized by CEDAC in collaboration with Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP) for CORA (Collective Rice Action) ASIA 2011, at the Samrith Laek Sovannaram Pagoda in Po village, Krang Svay commune. 84 people, including 54 women, students from the Royal University of Agriculture, local authorities, farmer associations, women groups and farmers participated.

The All Nepal Peasants' Federation of Nepal (ANPFa) in collaboration with Pesticide Action Network Asia and Pacific (PAN AP) organized a peoples' tribunal on saving rice for CORA (Collective Rice Action) Nepal 2011. Held at the National Agricultural Research Centre premises in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, a panel of three judges heard the testimonies of small rice farmers, scientists and activists on the situation of rice in the country.

Farmer-Scientist Group Troops to DA to Stop Bt Talong Field Trial

Farmers, scientists and non-government organizations today trooped in front of the Department of Agriculture to seek a dialogue with Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala to call for the immediate stoppage of field test trials of the genetically modified talong (eggplant) at different areas in the Philippines. This came after Sec Alcala’s pronouncement that he will not approve the commercialization of the GM crop if it will cause unintended health effects to the consumers.
