The artist of this lovely painting that graces the centre of the T-shirt for the People's Year of Rice Action 2009-2010 is Eric Quah. Eric is an award-winning artist who hails from Malaysia but spent many years overseas, mostly in Australia. On his return home to Penang in 2003, he was inspired to paint rice, having grown up in Kedah, the 'rice bowl' of Malaysia. This work of art, entitled "Love Rice" was one of the many oil paintings which were featured in his highly successful solo exhibition, "Padi Fields". "Love Rice" (originally entitled "Love Rice: Breakfast") features a steaming hot bowl of cooked fluffy rice sitting centre-stage in a simple rural home setting. Real rice grains are pasted on. The rice bowl represents Asian culture and reflects the artist's reminiscence of his Chinese roots. Eric also sees the rice bowl as symbolic of community spirit and solidarity; binding people together. Behind the bowl is an open window, flanked on either side by graceful padi stalks. Eric uses a lot of yellow-green as these are the colours etched in his childhood memories of the rice fields around his home. These refreshing and bright colours represent the vibrancy of nature and life itself. "Love Rice" was chosen for the YORA T-shirt as it epitomizes the theme of YORA: Rice for Life and Livelihood and how loving rice is the reason all of us must work together in order to Save Our Rice.
