GE Road Show 2008

The GE Road show which will take place in Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia this August 2008, has been established to raise awareness and educate consumers, government officials, academicians, civil society leaders, agriculture officials, farmers, women and men and every walk of life.

This road show entails Dr Michael Hansen from Consumer International who will talk about the increasingly worrying situations of GE in Asia and the cost and harm of GE crops (which are highly promoted by the industry) in seminars, forums, institutions and universities.

Indeed, the failure of BT cotton in Andhra Pradesh India is causing an alarming trend of farmers' suicide cases and Kerala, the rice bowl of India, is increasingly facing the threat of GE rice.

Although Sri Lanka was the first country in Asia to ban the import of GE food it has however decided to lift the ban due to the American pressure.

Malaysia, a developing country, has also subsequently caught the fever of biotechnology and has welcomed GE crops believing it as though it is the miracle solution to achieve food security. The government and research industries have pour in a lot of funding for the research on GE crops.

Therefore having Dr Michael Hansen to thread on these countries is crucial in order to educate the people of their ignorance, raise their awareness and let them know that the choices they are making might affect our generation and future generations to come.
